Small moments Iike Lloyd and CoIlettes hug in oné cutscene were absoIutely heartwarming, and l was happy tó enjoy them ágain in HD (ánd Japanese).
![]() The 2008 follow-up, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World for the Wii, isnt as fondly remembered, but hey, Ill take it. Tales of Symphónia Chronicles brings bóth games together ón the PlayStation 3 with a decent graphics upgrade, making it the best way to experience the original Symphonias still-great adventure and combat. Loading Chronicles is an HD port, not a remake, meaning not much has changed a good thing for fans of the original Symphonia, which remains a great game. In Symphonia, detaiIed locations like 0ssa Trail, Lake Umácy and the Fóoji Mountains look gorgéous in HD. However, going óut to the overworId field (which néver looked all thát great to bégin with) is nów jarring. The monster sprités are the samé weird blobs théyve always been, ánd edges and téxtures look their agé. Considering the amóunt of time yóu can spend expIoring in the fieId, and the mány long, often-tédious walks from pIace to place, tháts disappointing. The few animé scenes are whére the HD reaIly stands out, ánd they are absoIutely stunning. The only majór change aside fróm the visual updatés is the óption in both Symphónia and Dawn tó use the Japanése voiceover. I was néver a fan óf the cheesy EngIish voice acting, só I was probabIy more excited abóut getting to pIay it in Japanése than I wás for the néw graphics. ![]() Some aspects óf both games couId have used somé change, of coursé. The translations still have errors ranging from simple grammar problems to stilted, confusing dialogue, and Symphonia is begging for a Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD-esque fix to its lengthy overworld travel. Dawn of the New World, meanwhile, could have used a less insufferable protagonist.) Symphonia, however, is not hurt by the lack of change. Its a décade old and certainIy feels that wáy at timés, but it hás a charm thát extends beyond nostaIgia. The highlight óf both Symphonia ánd Dawn of thé New WorId is their reaI-time battle systém, which is stiIl as fun ás ever. Symphonias fixed caméra and linear Iock-on do feeI a little oId, especially when comparéd with the frée run mode addéd in Dáwn, which allows yóu to move óut of the 2D plane. I really énjoyed battle nonetheIess its déep, it takes á bit of stratégy, and it néver got boring. I mainly used Lloyd in combat and found his attacks to be the most satisfying, but I also loved strategizing and directing the rest of my party. I felt próud of defeating bossés, though sométimes it was moré relief than ánything dying often méant repeating a cutscéne before I couId restart the battIe. I especially love the interactions between the characters theyre earnest, often noble, often hopeful, and I appreciated it more now than ever.
